Lot Selection
Look for a lot that has a good southern exposure. Chose a building lot that doesn't require a lot of travel to purchase essentials.
Materials
Engineered/manufactured lumber products use wood fiber more efficiently than solid sawn lumber. All paints, finishes and adhesives need to to be low-VOC or no-VOC. Pastel colors typically have the fewest VOC's and dark colors have more.
Roof Designs
The heel of a truss or a conventional rafter system is always a week link in providing space for insulation. Trusses are engineered products that are often lighter, straighter and stronger than dimensional lumber.
Roofing Materials
There are several roofing materials that would be well suited for a "green" application. Fiberglass and metal roofing are good choices, both offer lengthy years of warranty.
